Old among New

Oh those good old days! Our childhood days! Then our neighborhoods were not so busy, not so crowded. Hawkers shouting ‘reshmi mithai’ poured honey into the ears of children. We used to throng them and watch how they spun it on their magical machine.

The line in your report, ‘’How and when this spun sugar treat was introduced en Bangladesh is unknown, but its popularity, amongst children has never dwindled…’’ (The Spun Sugar Confection, April 29) is encouraging. It is good to know that certain things in life do not change! I personally walked down the memory lane after reading your piece.

No Discrimination

Your report states, ‘’the street children of Dhaka resort to mischievous acts to earn money for their survival…’’ (Life on the Street, April 29). They do. But they are compelled to do so, because they also want to survive. And the right to life is universal. Our constitution also guarantees it. But they have to pay a high price for it, as your report also states, ‘’…the scars on their bodies bearing the marks of their misfortune’’. However, the society has an obligation to give a proper upbringing to its children without any discrimination. And it is the government of a country, which has the responsibility to see that the children are protected in their rights and safety. Street children will not resort to acts of mischief if they were shown the light at the end of gloomy tunnel.

Ivan the Terrible

Identifying himself with the Almighty, Russian Tsar Ivan the Terrible had claimed exemption from the observance of God’s laws, and, in defiance of the fundamental principles of the Greek church, of which he was the head, he married seven wives. Believing that he might with equal impunity insult the moral sense of other nations, he actually sought to add England’s queen, Elizabeth, to the list of his spouses. And he was so far right in his estimate of his power to do as he pleased, that the Virgin Queen, head of the English Church, while she would not herself become one of his wives, consented to assist him, and selected for his eighth consort Mary Hastings, the daughter or the Earl of Huntingdon. She came near bringing about a marriage between the two, in face of the fact that the two churches of which Ivan and she were respectively the heads ware agreed in condemning polygamy as a heinous crime.

The First Computer Bug

Back in 1945, after WWII ended, the gargantuan Mark II computer which ran ordinance calculations for the U.S. Navy shut down, Technicians eventually found that a moth trapped between two of the machine’s relay points was the culprit. Navy personnel preserved the moth in the daily log (photo above) and noted the first actual case of a bug being found in a computer, hence computer bug.  However, the culprit had been used to describe a mechanical malfunction since Thomas Edison’s day. Compute experts say that 55,000 new malware programs are introduced over the Internet every day.
